Cracks and Corrosion II for guitar and live electronics
Cracks and Corrosion I and II are two pieces that explores variation in music. The first piece is for clarinet, violin, viola, cello and piano, and the second piece is for guitar and live electronics. In each piece, musical material is recycled in different ways. Cracks and Corrosion II can also be seen as a variation of Cracks and Corrosion I.
The choice of very different instruments for the two versions is conscious. The different ensembles demands different type of musical structures. Also the fact that one piece includes live electronics and the other does not puts different demands on the music. The two pieces investigates in this way how the same musical idea can be expressed differently with different starting points.
In Cracks and Corrosion II the live electronics is included in the concept of variation. Sections of the performance are stored and build the basis for later sections in the piece. The stored sections can sometimes set the framework for the form of the later section, or build complex sound structures.
